Castlecoote House

As part of National Heritage Week, Paul Connolly will deliver a talk with full slide show on Saturday 24th August at 3pm in Castlecoote House, Co Roscommon. Castlecoote House and grounds will be open for Heritage Week, tea/coffee and home made savouries will be available for only €5.00.

Castlecoote House was in the centre of the brutal wars of the 17th century. With the end of those wars landed estates emerged throughout Ireland. Some of the finest were established in Co Roscommon.

In this talk, Paul will examine a number of the large estates and their families, famous and infamous, focusing on Castlecoote House, Clonalis, King House, Mount Talbot, and Mote House. Paul Connolly will also look at some of the smaller houses along the river Suck on both sides of the county boundary. Mr Connolly’s presentation will feature photographs of the houses with many of them coming from private family collections.

A tour of Castlecoote House will follow the talk.

The Speaker

Paul Connolly grew up in Mount Talbot, Co Roscommon. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering from UCC and a Diploma in Archaeology from UCG. Paul has a keen interest in national and local history.
