Ballynatray Estate Lodges

Ballynatray Estate has evidence of human activity dating back to the Bronze Age and has over the centuries amassed a rich and colourful history. It is the site of Molana Abbey, famous for its collection of Irish Canon Law, the battle ground of Viking raiders, resting place to Raymond (le Gros) Fitzerald, and not least the location of a Desmond Castle at Temple Michael owned at one time by Walter Raleigh and home to his advisor Thomas Hariot.

The surrounding landscape was laid out in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, during which time a causeway was built connecting Dairinis, where Molana Abbey is built to the shore east and west. The effect is a Romantic and Picturesque circuit from the House and Garden. Mrs Mary Grice Smyth romanticised the Abbey with inscriptions commemorating Mael An Faidh, and Raymond le Gros. Take a Ballynatray Picnic with you and explore the stunning parkland and gardens with commanding views of the Blackwater River.

The Groom’s Flat

From history we know that on an estate like Ballynatray the owners would employ a groom to keep their horses fed, watered and groomed. As on many estates the job came with accommodation next to the stable as the groom was expected to be on hand if any of the family wished to go horse-riding or if one of the horses fell ill. This is the case on the Ballynatray Estate.

Renovated & situated in the stable yard the Groom’s Flat is an ideal self catering option for two people. The Groom’s Flat now boasts a beautiful open plan structure which allows guests the feel of an authentic cottage complete with the original stone floor in the kitchen and a small wood burner. The double bedroom benefits from French doors, whilst the heritage bathroom includes a shower and is decorated with small hand painted tiles. It is extremely comfortable and would be ideal for anyone looking to escape from the frenetic buzz of city life to somewhere beautiful and rural where every need is catered for in this self-contained Estate.

The Garden Flat

Set in the grounds of Ballynatray Estate, the Garden Flat is located in the stable yard and is suitable for those looking for a self-catering holiday. The double bedroom is comfortably decorated in old pine with wooden floorboards. There is a large bathroom and the kitchen is well equipped, decorated in the style of a country kitchen with painted units, stone floor and large kitchen table to seat ten. The Garden Flat offers accommodation for 2 people on a beautiful private estate. It can be used for a luxury self catering week in the beautiful Irish countryside. A short stroll from the Garden Flat sits Ballynatray House, a magnificent 18th century Georgian mansion and is a fine architectural example of great country castle houses in Ireland. This privately owned Estate is set in 850 acres with century old noble trees and breathtaking views over the Blackwater River.

Don't Take Our Word For It...

“When you stay at Roundwood, you travel in time, to a place where you felt free of stress, free of pressure, free of demands, with nothing to concern you other than what volume to pluck from the library shelf, and what gin to choose for a drink, and what wine to choose to match with Paddy’s excellent cooking at dinner…”

McKenna’s Guides: Top 100 Places to Stay in Ireland

“If Roundwood has just come up in your search, and if you’re trying to avoid a bland, cookie-cutter hotel experience, book it now. You’ll never forget it! The family and the staff are friendly, attentive and kind and you’re likely to swap stories with the most interesting of fellow guests. This is our first visit since we held our wedding ceremony and celebration there 4 years ago and we’ll be back as often as we can ♥️”
