Ballyportry Castle

The 500 year old Gaelic Ballyportry Castle, is a pleasant half hour’s drive from the Wild Atlantic Way coastal route that leads around Galway Bay and on to the much visited Cliffs of Moher. The authentic castle is furnished in a classic rustic style. It stands high above the green landscape of County Clare with grazing horses and cattle nearby. At night the gate of the 17th century encircling bawn wall of the castle frames the moon as it rises over the distinctive shelving outline of the Clare hills.

Seven lakes can be seen from the rooftop walk. The late medieval castle walls enclose comfortable rooms and chambers with a Great Hall at the highest level, more than 100’ above the distinctive limestone Burren lands of this part of Clare. Ancient roadways nearby have become 21st century hiking routes through the flower rich Burren.

‘The 500 year old Gaelic Ballyportry Castle is always let as an exclusive let which means that you are the only guests while you are there. No more than 8 guests can stay.’

Our Ballymaloe trained chefs (the top cookery school in Ireland) can prepare dinner every evening. This is a distinctive pleasure that is part of the authentic experience of living in your own castle. Arrangements can be made for good traditional musicians to come to play in the Great Hall before or after dinner. Guided tours of the Burren by an expert guide tailored to your interests are one of the frequently mentioned highlights of a stay.

Don't Take Our Word For It...

"the stone castles that dot the Irish landscape are some of the most famous and evocative in the world”

Rick Steves Ireland Guide

If you are looking to rent your very own castle, this is it! Ballyportry takes you back in time with its six stories and amazing Ireland views from the cat walk of the castle. Every room is perfectly appointed and provides comfort and ambiance despite the medieval presence of an authentic 500 year old castle. My friends and I plan on returning this year and booking the castle for an entire week this year. Corafin is a good central location to travel from daily and is a true Irish town with a great restaurant, Boffy Quinn's where the food is fabulous and live, autentic Irish music is played on some evenings.
