Clonalis House

Clonalis House is a stunning Country House Hotel and is the ancestral home of the O’Conor family, direct descendants of Ireland’s last High King and traditional Kings of Connacht. The family has lived on this heavily wooded 700 acre estate on the banks of the River Suck for more than 1,000 years–an achievement unrivaled elsewhere in Ireland. The present Victorian house, the latest in a series on the estate, is a large, comfortable Italianate building on an elevated site. Clonalis is furnished with family portraits and memorabilia, including the harp of Turlough O’Carolan, the famous blind harpist.

The present owner, Richard O’Conor Nash, is the most recent of his family to live here and the 27th generation of O’Conors since the last high King of Ireland, an unbroken line of descent stretching back for more than a thousand years.

Life at Clonalis House is all about kicking back with all the ingredients for a lazy weekend in the country. Expect the good-old fashioned hospitality of bygone days, curious history and artwork to pore over, roaring turf fires to sit next to and a charismatic ambience brought to life by three generations of custodians that still call Clonalis House home; even the family dog might join you for a walk.

Curl up with a book on a squishy sofa in the library, borrow a pair of wellies and take a stroll in the 700-acre woodland estate, pull up a chair in the elegant dining room under ancient family portraits, enjoy an after-dinner drink by the crackling fire while being regaled with stories by your friendly hosts or take a stroll past the fields and meet the ‘High Kings’ – Pyers’s prize bull and favourite cows whose names reflect the family’s notable history.

Distinctive in character but designed with comfort in mind, our rooms are the perfect place to kick back and unwind: think four poster beds, original antiques, heirlooms, fireplaces, cosy blankets on top of crisp white sheets, beautiful big en-suite bath and large double sash windows framing pretty parkland views.

You might come here for a quiet escape but you’ll stay for the food. Don’t be fooled by the homely humming from the kitchen; the slant is pedigreed Irish countryside delivered with plenty of passion. Kick off those wellies and treat yourself to menus of hearty, unfussy and delicious food using the best seasonal produce from local artisan producers and suppliers and ingredients foraged from the estate. Enjoy a wonderful meal in the unhurried atmosphere of the elegant dining room under the watchful gaze of family portraits

Clonalis House Country HOuse Hotel is a place to feel at home.

We suggest that guests enjoy the simple pleasures of country living. Take advantage of miles of walks through our woods and meadows, play croquet on the lawn or a spot of tennis, surround yourself with nature, relax, recharge or revive.

Don't Take Our Word For It...

“We spent a wonderful time at Clonalis House. It was a real privilege to be surrounded by history and to be in the company the O'Connors. A special thank you to Piers for such a fascinating and interesting tour around the house. We learnt so much about the ancient and noble O'Connor lineage. Thanks also to Carol Ann and Richard for looking after us so well. Our room was spectacular - The Gold Room. We are keen to experience the cottages within the grounds when we return for our next stay.”

"We enjoyed a lovely weekend with friends at Clonalis house. A perfect place to catch up with old friends and get away from the hustle and bustle of city living. Gin and tonic in the warmth of the library before dinner was one of the many highlights …followed by a delicious meal prepared by our host. The food and service were exceptional - local produce cooked to perfection. This is a hidden treasure that offers a unique stay with top class Irish hospitality. P.s. make sure to meet Bailey, the resident Labrador, he provides a welcome equally as warm as his owners. "
