Lorum Old Rectory

Dating from 1863, Lorum Old Rectory sits beneath Mount Leinster in the peaceful valley of the River Barrow. Its warm, yellowish, locally cut granite gives it a distinctive and pleasing appearance. The house sits peacefully on the slopes above the River Barrow at Kilgreaney, about halfway between Bagenalstown and Borris. Behind the house are Mount Leinster and the Blackstairs Mountains while in front, across the river, are the plains of Kilkenny. Bobbie Smith and her daughter Rebecca are known for their warm welcome and splendid home baking. They know the area intimately and are always a fund of local knowledge.

Bobbie and Rebecca have built up an enviable reputation as a well-run, comfortable house offering good food and good company. They are both members of Euro-Toques and are renowned for their imaginative home cooking, using home-grown or local organic produce wherever possible.

Lorum Old Rectory is located between the Blackstairs Mountains and the Barrow Valley, in the south of County Carlow. The secret to discovering the true beauty of the Blackstairs and Barrow Valley is to spend time exploring its hidden treasures and getting to know the local people. Each twist and turn of the road will reveal a new delight, beautiful unspoiled towns and villages, breath-taking scenery, interesting rock formations, heather clad hills, grand country houses and ancient heritage sites. Its terrain is a rich tapestry woven with many coloured threads; fashioned by the forces of nature, megalithic monuments left by our ancestors and the colourful patchwork of carefully managed farmlands and forests.

You can select your own pace, a mountain hike, canoeing along the river or simply exploring and enjoying the unhurried pace of life amongst communities who are eager to share their paradise with you.

Don't Take Our Word For It...

"My husband and I stayed here for 5 days while he took a woodturning class with Glenn Lucas. I can't say enough great things about our stay there. Rebecca and her mom, Bobbie offered an amazing level of hospitatlity like none other. The food was incredible, our room and the entire B& B clean, comfortable, and beautifully decorated."

Sharyn W, Tripadvisor, Oct 2019

"I spent one night at Lorum but wish I could have extended my stay. This is a gorgeous property in a delightful rural setting - an oasis of calm and tranquility! The house is furnished with lovely antiques and even in June the log fire burning in the dining room was much appreciated.
The breakfast featuring top quality local produce was excellent.. Rebecca and Bobbi are wonderful hots. I will return!"
