Kilmokea Country Manor
Campile, Co. Wexford
Kilmokea is a former Georgian rectory, in a quiet, rural location where the Three Sister Rivers, the Suir, Nore and Barrow, meet before flowing out into Waterford Harbour. It’s rightly renowned for its seven acres of award-winning gardens, with a wide range of unusual sub-tropical plants and wonderful organic vegetables. Nearby is beautiful Hook Peninsula, with excellent coastal walks and magnificent Blue Flag beaches, or you can stay at home and relax in our private indoor pool or with a soothing aromatherapy treatment. Kilmokea is an ideal base for Wexford Festival Opera, visiting the bird sanctuaries on the Great Saltee and the North Slob, or exploring the unspoiled South Wexford coast.
Kilmokea’s magnificent gardens
Kilmokea in County Wexford, was originally a simple late Georgian Church of Ireland rectory built in 1794 and bought by Colonel and Mrs. David Price, who planned and planted a seven acre garden between 1950 and the mid 1980s with determination and taste. The mild, frost-free climate allowed them to plant a wide range of unusual plants from all around the world, including a number of sub-tropical species. These all flourished at Kilmokea and the garden became justly famous.
In the 1990s Kilmokea was purchased by Mark and Emma Hewlett, who now live there with their young family. They have maintained the garden and thoroughly refurbished the house which now provides luxurious country house accommodation for visitors. It is decorated with warm colours and all the bedrooms, some of which have four poster beds or bateau-lits, have wonderful views over the garden.
Spoil yourself with relaxing massages
Kilmokea has a spa with a tennis court, an indoor swimming pool, a jacuzzi, a sauna, a gym and a croquet lawn, all for the exclusive use of their guests who can also avail of beauty treatments, aromatherapy and reflexology as a further aid to relaxation.
Kilmokea nestles in a clump of trees above the River Barrow on the north side of Great Island, just a mile upstream the confluence with the River Suir. Kilmokea allows guests to experience the very best of Irish country life. The area has eleven golf courses and links, several blue flag beaches, coastal walks, diving and sea fishing on the Hook Peninsula. Horse riding, sailing, cycling and deep sea fishing can also be arranged.
Wexford’s history trail
South Wexford was the first part of Ireland to be colonised by invading Normans, and the area is rich in early buildings. The lighthouse on Hook Head is one of the earliest in the country; the abbeys of Dunbrody and Tintern are nearby, as is the famous ‘rotten borough’ of Clonmines, with its unique fortified church. Once a prosperous town, it continued to elect two members to the Irish Parliament until 1800, even though it had long since ceased to exist as a community.
From Kilmokea you can also visit the famous bird sanctuary on Great Saltee Island and the Wexford Opera Festival, while Kilkenny Castle and Waterford with its famous Crystal factory are also within easy reach (the latter via the nearby Passage East – Ballyhack Car Ferry).
