The Coach House
Youghal, Co. Cork
Ballynatray House is a magnificent 18th century Georgian mansion and is a fine architectural example of great country castle houses in Ireland. Owned by Henry Gwyn Jones, this privately owned Estate is set in 850 acres with century old noble trees and breathtaking views over the Blackwater River.
The Ballynatray Estate has evidence of human activity dating back to the Bronze Age and has over the centuries amassed a rich and colourful history. It is the site of Molana Abbey, famous for its collection of Irish Canon Law, the battle ground of Viking raiders, resting place to Raymond (le Gros) Fitzerald, and not least the location of a Desmond Castle at Temple Michael owned at one time by Walter Raleigh and home to his advisor Thomas Hariot.
The first recorded house was built in the early half of the seventeenth century by Sir Richard Smyth. The house described as a ‘castellated dwelling’ was virtually destroyed in 1645 and later rebuilt several times by successive generations until it took on its current appearance, a Georgian mansion as re-modelled by Grice Smyth in 1795-97. It remained in his family until the end of the 20th century.
The surrounding landscape was laid out in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, during which time a causeway was built connecting Dairinis, where Molana Abbey is built to the shore east and west. The effect is a Romantic and Picturesque circuit from the House and Garden. Mrs Mary Grice Smyth romanticised the Abbey with inscriptions commemorating Mael An Faidh, and Raymond le Gros.
Ballynatray has a varied mix of habitat, ranging from mature oak woodland to open arable and grass land through to foreshore and marsh habitat. Due to this mix of different habitats, the Estate can support a vast array of different mammals and birds that would generally not be able to be observed on any one place. Take a Ballynatray Picnic with you and explore the stunning parkland and gardens with commanding views of the Blackwater River.
Self Catering Accommodation
The Coach House
As the name suggests, it was originally the Coach House where the owner of the Estate would have kept the horse drawn carriages along with all the necessary tack for the horses. Sometimes these buildings housed some very ornate and fascinating carriages. The two storey Coach House takes centre stage in the stable yard and has been transformed into a beautiful, luxurious 4 bedroom self catering property. Downstairs there is a very relaxing style open plan kitchen & dining area with comfortable couches which allow for great conversations even while you prepare a bite of lunch or dinner.
Within the quaint stable yard and in view of Ballynatray House itself, the Coach House really is a home from home with beautifully maintained gardens & parklands. Guests staying in the Coach House need only step outside for a breath of fresh air and take in the breathtaking views of the Blackwater River as it makes its way through the Estate. This is the perfect retreat for any family who wishes to step back form the hustle & bustle of modern life and just relax and soak up the atmosphere only a private estate can offer.
