César Award for The Quay House in Clifden

Congratulations to Paddy & Julia Foyle from The Quay House in Clifden, Co Galway who collected their César Award from the Good Hotel Guide in London last week. Well deserved award for two amazing hosts and their wonderful home in Co Galway. Perched on the edge of Clifden Harbour, The Quay House is just minutes from the centre of this vibrant, engaging town. Dating from 1820, it is Clifden’s oldest house, originally built for the harbour master.

The Quay House

Paddy & Julia Foyle

The owners, Paddy and Julia and their family, operate a luxurious town house in what is still very much their own family home. The decoration of the main reception rooms displays their eclectic collection of pictures and objects, which reflects their wide-ranging interests and tastes, and their close attention to detail. The bedrooms are also individually decorated and furnished.

The Castle-Castletownshend

We are delighted to welcome The Castle-Castletownshend and its owner, Sharon Poulter to Hidden Ireland.

Built by the Townshend family, the house gradually expanded with the towers being added in the 1800’s. Now 11 generations on and rejuvenated in 2016, The Castle offers both an authentic historic home, with its wood panelled walls, family portraits and museum like ornaments, and all the expected modern facilities.

A warm welcome awaits you at The Castle, Castletownshend so you can relax and unwind in this peaceful setting. Every bedroom is individually named and decorated so each having it’s own charm, the balcony in “Army”, the large four poster bed in “Archbishops”, and the double bath in “Chavenage”, all making a unique and memorable stay.

The Castle-CastletownshendBreakfast is served each day in the Dining Room on the East side, perfect for the morning light to enjoy the fresh buffet table and order a hot cooked to order Irish breakfast. Eight of our unique rooms boast King size beds which help you to enjoy the luxury of the accommodation offered at the Castle-Castletownshend.

Castletownshend is an unspoilt village set on a steep hill running all the way down to The Castle at the bottom, past the “Two Trees” in the middle of the road. The village has an air of days gone by with its old phone box, petrol pump and listed green water pumps. The village has much to offer with Mary Ann’s Bar & Restaurant just 2min walk from The Castle, serving award winning food all day throughout the year. Lil McCarthy’s pub at the top of the village is open for late drinks and hosts music throughout the summer months. The small village shop offers news papers, basics and the local gossip! In an area full of history, visit the Church to see Harry Clarke stained glass windows, check opening times for the Edith Somerville museum and gardens. Walk to the “Three fingers” or Knockdrum fort for amazing views of the Castlehaven area.

Skibbereen market town (farmers market on a Saturday) is just a 10 min drive away, with a selection of cafes, restaurants and bars. Visit the art gallery or the Heritage centre to learn all about the famine or to trace your family roots.

Why not let Sharon and her team look after you in The Castle, Castletownshend where you will most definitely experience a warm welcome.

Hidden Ireland Houses

Spreading the word about our best-kept hospitality secrets!

Hidden Ireland Houses

Roundwood House, Mountrath, Co Laois

Hidden Ireland Houses share an ethos of hospitality, tradition and history and they are open for business: for holiday visits, for corporate affairs, for weddings, for house rental or bed and breakfast overnight accommodation.

When you chose to stay in a Hidden Ireland property you will find that they have a selection of enchanting bedrooms, gorgeously carpeted drawing rooms and galleried stairways, antlered halls hung with ancestral portraits, heritage china and glass on tables which can sit from 12 to 30 people in settings where an epergne (an ornamental centrepiece) is just another detail in the serving of excellent food.

Every roof shelters modern kitchens, sophisticated bathrooms and central heating. Restored outbuildings revive stable yards there are walled gardens, rare turf barns and acres of woodland, moor and river bank. These properties are mostly country houses of middle size (and some smaller than that) which still breathe the cultural context of Lady Gregory and Sir Hugh Lane, of Elizabeth Bowen and Molly Keane, of the landed Protestant and Catholic gentry who sometimes could afford to employ the best architects, sculptors, stuccadores and decorators in Ireland, and did so.
