Set at the foot of the Slieve Bloom Mountains, just over an hour from Dublin, Roundwood House is surrounded by mature trees, lawns, gardens and delightful, extensive outbuildings. It is a historic home of architectural interest and was once described by Desmond Guinness, co-founder of the Irish Georgian Society, as having a “marvellous doll’s house-like quality”.

A rambling avenue leads you through a welcoming committee of animals and into a bright, spacious hall. There is a drawing room, study and dining room, where the combination of log fires, antique furniture and absence of televisions may actually make you believe you’ve been transported back to the 18th century. (A bottle of wine tends to hasten the trip.)

The six bedrooms in the Main House are all en-suite, spacious and unique. They contain their original architectural features, have gracious views of the lawns and courtyards and promise to give you one of the best night’s sleep you’ll know. The four bedrooms in the Yellow House (not a modern annex but the original house built by Anthony Sharp, whose grandson subsequently built the Main House) are en-suite, quaint and comfortable. They each have views of a beautiful walled garden.

If you decide to venture out into the surrounding countryside there is no shortage of things to see and do. The Slieve Bloom are the oldest mountain range in Europe and from the top on a clear day, one can see the high points of the four ancient provinces of Ireland. The area is picturesque, unspoiled and peaceful - a delight for hikers and cyclists of all abilities. Horse-riding, fishing and golfing are also available locally. Meanwhile, foraging, yoga and guided mountain walks can be arranged for groups with prior notice.

Don't Take Our Word For It...

“When you stay at Roundwood, you travel in time, to a place where you felt free of stress, free of pressure, free of demands, with nothing to concern you other than what volume to pluck from the library shelf, and what gin to choose for a drink, and what wine to choose to match with Paddy’s excellent cooking at dinner…”

McKenna’s Guides: Top 100 Places to Stay in Ireland

“If Roundwood has just come up in your search, and if you’re trying to avoid a bland, cookie-cutter hotel experience, book it now. You’ll never forget it! The family and the staff are friendly, attentive and kind and you’re likely to swap stories with the most interesting of fellow guests. This is our first visit since we held our wedding ceremony and celebration there 4 years ago and we’ll be back as often as we can ♥️”

Martina Farragher, Google Review, 2019
