Quay House Self Catering

Self-catering stay at The Quay House Clifden

Book a Self-Catering Stay at The Quay House Clifden

Perched on the edge of Clifden Harbour, The Quay House is just minutes from the centre of this vibrant, engaging town. Dating from 1820, it is Clifden’s oldest house, originally built for the harbour master. The present owners are Paddy and Julia Foyle, whose family have been involved in tourism in the region for almost a century. They are constantly on hand to share their suggestions of what to see and do. Paddy & Julia also preside over the finest of breakfasts–the perfect start to a day exploring Connemara.

The Quay House stands right beside the harbour in the market town of Clifden, long considered the capital of Connemara, a beautiful region of mountains, lakes and coastal inlets and the most westerly part of County Galway. Fishing boats and traditional gaff-rigged Galway Hookers are moored right alongside the house, yet it is just a short walk from the centre of the town, with its colourful restaurants, cafes and shops.

The Quay House was originally built as a residence for the Harbour Master, but it subsequently became a Franciscan monastery, then a convent and finally a Country House Bed & Breakfast owned by the Pye family, so it has had a long and chequered career. Today it is run as a Town House by the Foyle family, whose forebears have been entertaining guests in Connemara for nearly a century.

In the self catering part of the Quay house there is a fully fitted kitchen complete with washing machine & dryer and all mod cons. The decoration of the main reception rooms displays their eclectic collection of pictures and objects, which reflects their wide-ranging interests and tastes, and their close attention to detail. The bedrooms are also individually decorated and furnished. Some have good antiques and original paintings, several have working fireplaces, and all overlook the harbour.

Nearby are wonderful beaches, coastal walks, sea and trout fishing, horse riding, cycling, several golf courses and links, and a vast choice of hill and mountain walks.

Temple House

Temple House on the Wild Atlantic Way

This is the perfect time to book a stay at Temple House on the Wild Atlantic Way and explore all that Sligo has to offer!

Temple House, Ballymote, Co Sligo is one of the finest estates in the west of Ireland. The great house, which was remodeled in 1864. Nestled in a wooded demesne, looking out over the Templars’ castle to Templehouse Lake. Despite its vast size this is a comfortable, welcoming family home with many original contents. The owners are Roderick and Helena Perceval, whose family has lived here since 1665. Temple House is surrounded by an area of outstanding natural beauty, with beaches, mountains and numerous sites of archaeological interest. It is a haven for the outdoor enthusiast, with fishing on a private lake and miles of lovely woodland walks.

Temple House is a vast classical house in the Georgian style, set in the centre of a beautiful 1000 acre west of Ireland estate. This of course is ideal for exploring the Wild Atlantic Way and in particular Sligo, Donegal, Leitrim & Mayo.  After a day exploring you can then return to the house and be welcomed with a mouthwatering menu for dinner and plenty of rest and relaxation afterwards. Sipping a glass of wine while overlooking Temple House Lake and the 13th century castle of the Knights Templar.

Roderick & Helena are welcoming and consummate hosts taking great pride in the character of their home, north west Ireland and the special nature of Temple House Estate.

Temple House still retains its authentic decoration and furniture from that period and delicate Chinese porcelain is intermingled with solid County Sligo squires and their ladies. The main reception rooms are large, bright and comfortable, while the bedrooms – several have canopied beds – are particularly pleasant, with superb views.

Clonalis House in Castlerea, Co Roscommon and Birdhill House & Gardens in Clonmel, Co Tipperary appear under the heading of “cool castles & character stays”!

Clonalis House

Clonalis House Castlerea Roscommon Ireland

To quote Nicola Brady when it comes to historical properties, Castlerea’s Clonalis House is top of the pile. Life at Clonalis House is all about kicking back with all the ingredients for a lazy weekend in the country. Expect the good-old fashioned hospitality of bygone days, roaring turf fires to sit next to and a charismatic ambience. Curl up with a book on a sofa in the library or borrow a pair of wellies and take a stroll in the 700-acre woodland estate. Clonalis House won the O’Flynn Group Heritage Prize, recognising the dedication to history and preservation of old Irish architecture. To quote Carol-Anne, from Clonalis House “it’s a never ending project”. An excellent choice for inclusion in the Irish Independent’s Fab 50, Ireland’s best places to stay in 2022. Wild Atlantic Way

Explore the Wild Atlantic Way

Is it time you went to explore the Wild Atlantic Way?

The Wild Atlantic Way is a world-renowned touring route up the wild and rugged west coast of Ireland. The northerly tip starts on the Inishowen peninsula in Co Donegal and it finishes in the beautiful town of Kinsale in Co Cork, some 2,500 km.

If you are limited on time you can do it in a week but 2-3 weeks would be better. It is a driving (or cycling) tour that meanders its way casually along the Atlantic coast line. The Wild Atlantic Way highlights some 188 of the very best discovery points to see! It also affords you the opportunity to steer off the well sign posted route and explore many more memorable attractions.

You need not try to do it all. Pick out a region or two and explore at a leisurely pace. Come back another time to do some more. Maps are deceiving in Ireland. It takes longer than you might expect because there is so much to see and do around every bend in the road and behind every blossom laden hedge.

Hidden Ireland & The Wild Atlantic Way

Hidden Ireland accommodation is scattered up and down the trail giving you a great choice of where to stay while you explore the Wild Atlantic Way. An historic Country House bed and breakfast might suit you for a couple of days or a whole house vacation rental in a cottage, lodge or even a manor might suit an extended stay better. It will be a memorable experience to share with friends or family.

Make sure to check out what Hidden Ireland can offer as you explore the Wild Atlantic Way! We even have a map to help you organise your trip along the west coast! Click HERE to check it out!

Roundwood House

Amazing Food at Roundwood House

Amazing food is essential, especially when you go away for a few days! Roundwood House specialises in amazing food!

Hannah, Paddy and their family are the proud owners of Roundwood House in Mountrath, Co Laois. Set at the foot of the Slieve Bloom Mountains which is just over an hour from Dublin. Roundwood House is surrounded by mature trees, lawns, gardens and delightful, extensive outbuildings. It is a historic home of architectural interest and was once described by Desmond Guinness, co-founder of the Irish Georgian Society, as having a “marvellous doll’s house-like quality”.

The rambling avenue leads you through a welcoming committee of animals and into a bright, spacious hall. There is a drawing room, study and dining room, where the combination of log fires, antique furniture and absence of televisions may actually make you believe you’ve been transported back to the 18th century. (A bottle of wine tends to hasten the trip.)

Amazing Food

Hannah & Paddy are very much the hands on type! Paddy has an amazing skill with the wooden spoon and a whisk because every dish that leaves the kitchen has character, flavour & indeed a work of art!
